In each academic year Future U, with our partners, directly invests in the development and delivery of a range of projects and activities designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of young people as they consider their future education and career options.

Academic Tutoring

The Academic Tutoring programme provides Maths and English tutoring to pupils in year 9 with the aim of raising attainment. Delivered by current university students and designed by academic staff, learners will receive a mixture on in person and virtual tutoring sessions as well as visiting 

a local university to further supports learners’ knowledge and understanding of potential future pathways. 

Assessment Centre Challenges

Employers regularly use assessment centre type tasks to identify the key skills required in their new employees, and to choose which candidates they wish to employ. This project aims to offer approximately 300 post 16 learners the opportunity to experience a rigorous assessment centre activity aimed at learners interested in working in the science, technology, engineering and maths sectors. 

Digital Advantage – SEND Learners

The SEND Transition to HE Programme aims to showcase some of the exciting opportunities in the digital sector, the skills needed to progress in them, and the local pathways available. The project involves learners taking part in a 6-day intensive Digital Advantage programme, including input from FE and HE partners.

English Attainment - Future Writers

This project is designed to increase confidence and attainment in English Language and Literature through a series of interventions directly related to subject specific GCSE learning outcomes. It is a sustained and progressive programme featuring careers and communication workshops, academic taster sessions, HEI visits and a creative writing competition.

The Future Zoo project offers learners an opportunity to learn about wildlife conservation and the variety of jobs available in zoology and other related careers. As well as learning about the sector, students will also develop employability skills such as teamwork, communication, and initiative. The project consists of activities at Blackpool Zoo, either Myerscough or Lancaster and Morecambe College and UCLan’s Young Scientist Centre. Participants will also complete an independent project using the skills and knowledge they have gained.

Global Leadership Development Programme (GLDP)

The Global Leadership Development Programme (GLDP) is a three-day programme that seeks to  empower participants to make positive changes in their lives and in wider society. The expected impact being  that  programme participants,  who are in the main will be Sanctuary Seekers will develop skills and understanding in community activism and sustainability. A session exploring potential Level 4 higher education pathways will be supported.

Motor Vehicle Engineering Raising Aspirations Project

The Education and Employment Fair for Resettlers was hosted at Preston’s Deepdale Stadium and supported Refugees and Asylum Seekers across Lancashire by offering bespoke information, advice and guidance.

The aim of the event was to:

  • Increase awareness of education, employment and volunteering opportunities within Lancashire.
  • Provide guidance on how to convert existing qualifications.
  • Offer advice on student finance.
  • Provide an opportunity to network with potential employers, education and training providers.

 

A CPD session delivered by Refugee Education UK was also offered to the 20+ exhibitors before the event.

Pathway to STEM - Astronomy for All - Strand 1

Using astronomy as a vehicle to engage with students in the North West to deliver the wow factor in Astrophysics and enthuse the next generation physics students, this project provides a variety of support to learners, CPD opportunities for teachers and outreach engagement for the wider community.

The programme, delivered by Lancaster University’s physics departments, includes skills workshops, careers talks, subject specific talks and a conference at which the learners will present at.

Pathway to STEM - Coaching

STEM coaching is a three-session programme delivered by Lancaster University’s physics department to learners in years 8 & 9. 

The programme aims to increase confidence in the subject matter, as well as providing access to people within the STEM industry to help map progression routes into both STEM education and careers.

Pathways to STEM is a 3-day research experience at Lancaster University for learners in year 10. 

The program facilitates learners development of STEM specific skills with the aim of increasing confidence in ability and understanding of requirements for a role in a STEM industry.

Talk the Talk

Talk the Talk are a charity who deliver a series of workshops designed to help young people find their voice and use it confidently. We have commissioned them to run their ‘Talk About Communication’ session with some of our target schools.

The session is a fast-paced and engaging confident communication workshop that develops students’ oracy skills and spoken confidence.

The Lancashire Colleges Skills Competition is an opportunity where students can showcase the technical skills that they have learnt across a number of specialisms.

Using a competition  & showcase platform, involving assessment by local employers, the pupils will have opportunity to develop transferable skills and understand future career pathways.

The Skills Competition will be supported with the development of a video coaching resource to help participants maximise their involvement in the competition. 

Uni Connect Supporting Estranged Students CPD

Using a competition approach the overall of this project is to inspire young people to pursue a career in Hospitality & Catering.

The Competition will bring together schools, colleges and employers to provide young people with more information on careers in the Hospitality & Catering sector, enabling them to make informed choices about their options and the pathways to Higher Education.

Activities will include the competition, catering skills workshops and visits to a further education setting to explore future education & career  pathways into Hospitality, Catering, and Farm to Fork.
