Sporty Fleetwood students get a kick out of career programme

A programme designed to raise awareness of the wide range of sporting careers available to young people has helped 10 Year students from Fleetwood High School consider what their futures might hold.

‘He Kicks On’ was developed to support the aspirations of the group, all of whom have a passion for sport – predominantly football – but were unsure of the options open to them as they get ready for their GCSEs.

Organised by Future U in partnership with Blackpool and The Fylde College, the four-week initiative took place at the College’s Bispham Campus. It focused on exploring the varied career paths in the world of sport including Psychology, Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Coaching, Marketing and Journalism.

Split into two parts, students spent time in the classroom studying the theory side of sport and completed a series of activities to increase their understanding of what higher education (HE) entails. Physical activity sessions were delivered by Blackpool FC’s Community Trust, with the organisation’s Senior Sports Participation Officer Michael Brown on hand for inspiration and guidance.

Working in pairs as teammates, with their own team kit, crest and motto, the students competed for points in their own league table to win prizes, including football merchandise.

Theo Blackburn, Outreach Officer at Future U, said: “This has been a very positive experience taking young people on a journey to discover the many career opportunities available to them.

“The group’s knowledge of and aspirations towards HE opportunities have definitely increased, which all stems from their own love of sports. I feel they have a great awareness of the qualifications needed to aspire to the various careers and career areas covered. This of course all begins with the importance of them achieving their GCSEs at school.

“It’s clear the students have enjoyed taking ownership of their own learning by establishing their own group rules, teams, crest designs and contributions. The physical sessions with Blackpool’s Community Trust have been a real success as all have been given the opportunity to partake in inclusive and fun sessions.”
