Edge Hill University hosts inspirational health event for local pupils

On Friday 25th May 2018, Edge Hill University hosted an interactive event for local high schools to find out more about  routes into healthcare careers.

The ‘Aspire to Be’ event provided students with the opportunity to follow a fictional patient’s journey throughout the healthcare system, using Edge Hill’s clinical skills simulation rooms to create a realistic, but risk-free, scenario environment. Activities were facilitated by NHS Trust staff and Edge Hill academics.

Using both actors and robot-style training manikins, students began the scenario at the scene of a fictional accident, where they were required to assist paramedic staff in providing emergency care to the injured patient at the scene. Attendees then followed the patient to, and throughout, the simulated hospital environment where they met practitioners from all areas of the healthcare environment, including care at home and in the community.

Students also had the opportunity to take part in a Health Sector Skills workshop delivered by the Future U Outreach Team, and a student experience session where they could speak to current undergraduate Edge Hill students who share their student experience of studying a health-related course at university.

Feedback from the event was incredibly positive, with one teacher commenting that the event “…was a wonderful chance for the students to experience different healthcare roles in action”. This was similarly echoed by one student who remarked that “I can do so much more than I thought” in regards to pursuing a future career in Healthcare.

The event was funded by Shaping Futures, and involved collaborative partners: Future U; Aintree NHS Trust; Southport and Ormskirk NHS
