Being Human

You’re born into this world with no shame and no name. You grow tall and throw some balls, you learn and you play. The colours around you scream while you beg for ice cream. You play hide and seek, finding new places in the world, the park, the trees, you’ll be when you grow up. You have your whole life ahead of you, you’re only young, playing on the swing and singing with your friends. You trip and you fall, but you get back up, you get bruises and stitches and your tears fall. The years go on and you’re at a new school. New friends, new teachers, new lessons to be taught. Sit up straight, and look at the board. Do what you’re told. You do the right things, you do the wrong things, overall you learn a lot. English, maths, science, history, geography. Not only those but about being human. You fall out with your friends, you do bad on your test, you put pressure on yourself to do better on your next. Your head’s going to explode, you’re feeling emotions you’ve never felt. Anger, sadness, embarrassment and anxiety. You feel like the world’s going to fall apart. Then you put on a smile and try your best, and get good scores on your tests. You grow up and you no longer feel alone, your mum and dad tell you how proud of you they are. Although you’re no longer in school there are still lessons to be learnt. How to take care of a cat or how to drive. You get employed on your first job. You feel free at last, waiting to get paid at the end of the month. New clothes, new food, new life, and then you realise that there is still more to come. You have your first child and you teach them to talk. They tell you no a lot of times and you learn to stay calm. They grow on your face, you go to a new place. Paris, Rome or space. The stars align and you learn who you are. Your life and your name and the memories you have. The first time you talked, the first time you walked, your favourite toy, the life lessons you were taught. Your family and friends gather at the holidays. You cheer, you sing, you share jokes that make you smile. You think about the past and the amazing life that you had. You rode a rollercoaster and lost the plot there for a while, but even through the hard times you found things to make you smile. Being human is hard but if you give up, you never tried. Waking up in the morning and brushing your teeth, it can be hard. So be a human, do your job and work hard.
